The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ20 Digital Camera A bit less than the sum of its parts?

byHoward_Creech Nov 18, 2004

Pros 12X Leica zoom, manual controls, large LCD screen, live Histogram, Hot shoe
Cons Minor chromatic aberration, EVF difficult to use in low light, underpowered

The DMC-FZ20 is the replacement for Pansonics popular FZ10. The design folks at Panasonic stuffed all the FZ10's best features into a new more streamlined body with a bigger handgrip and a significantly larger LCD screen, punched the resolution up to 5 megapixels (the FZ10 was 4 megapixels), added... Not many people consider Panasonic digital cameras when shopping. They may be making a big mistake. Although not as well known by potential digital camera consumers as Canon, Nikon or Olympus, Panasonic does produce excellent digital cameras that utilize Leica lenses by Leica Camera AG.

After reading about the FZ10 I was almost about to buy one this summer when Panasonic announced the FZ20. I waited until October and got the FZ20 and am glad I waited. This camera is very versatile, easy to use, and takes great pictures. There are some things I would like to change in this camera,... Read full review »

After my Canon Rebel died (after 14 years) I was searching for a camera that was capable of producing quality shots for less than $1000 complete. It took me a year to resolve the digital vs. film debate but after reviewing numerous articles and actually "test driving" a friend's FZ20, I was hooked... Read full review »

I carefully compared several cameras before deciding to purchase my silver FZ20, sight unseen. I played around with a Fuji S7000,a Konica Minolta Z3 and Canon S1 IS, and read a ton about the FZ series Panasonic cameras, including reviews of the FZ3 and FZ10 by various users on camera forums. I was... Read full review »

The FZ20 is one incredible camera for the money. I have had the camera for two weeks and I can find little to fault on it.

I have done professional videography for many years but I don't consider myself to be a professional photographer. Everyone tells me that I do take pretty good... Read full review »

I have used this camera for over 2 years now and I am very impressed with the quality of the photos and the fit and finish of this camera. It seems kind of old now that higher resolution cameras are available from Panasonic but I may keep this camera for years. It has done everything I wanted it to... Read full review »

12X Optical Zoom, Image Stabilization, 5MP for less than $550....you are not going to beat the Panasonic FZ-20. Is it a perfect camera? Obviously not! Is it as good as a digital SLR? Obviously not! But for the serious amature photographer wanting manual controls, a long zoom (400mm +) and a hot... Read full review »

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ20 is a superb long lens camera worthy of consideration. Since so many reviews have already covered the various technical aspects, I'll focus my comments from a user viewpoint, having owned a dozen or so digital cameras since they first appeared some years back. I take... Read full review »

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ20S 5MP Digital Camera with 12x Image Stabilized Optical Zoom (Silver)

Interesting. It looks like an SLR but it really isn't. Instead of changing lenses, it's got a 12-times zoom lens that goes from wide-angle to large telephoto focal lengths, equivalent to 36mm to 432mm in a 35mm film camera. Not an ordinary lens either, Leica Vario Elmarit. It's a Lumix Digital-camera and it stores still and movie images on SD or MMC memory cards. Here's a rare feature: Jitter from shaky hands is one of the main reasons why cameras produce blurry images. We don't expect everyone to have hands of stone when taking pictures--that's why Lumix cameras help solve the problem of unsteady hands with advanced MEGA Optical Image Stabilizer technology. The DMC-FZ20 has a built-in gyrosensor that detects any hand movement and relays a signal to a tiny microcomputer inside the camera, which instantly calculates the compensation needed. A linear motor then shifts the Optical Image Stabilizer lens as necessary to guide incoming light from the image straight to the CCD. You won't even notice it working--all you'll see are the outstanding results! It's time to get a Lumix and smile. Up to 2560 x 1920 still image resolution / Up to 320x240 QVGA digital video resolution at 10 or 30 fps with audio / A still image may have up to 5 seconds audio 2 LCD Screen SD Memory Card Slot USB and AV Cables and ports for image transfer to PC - Macintosh - TV Includes 16MB SD memory card but we suggest buying an optional 256MB memory card (or larger) for practical use with this high-res camera Includes Rechargeable Li-Ion battery and Charger Includes Lens Cap, Hood Adapter, Wrist Strap Includes Image Transfer and Editing software suite Built-in multimode electronic-flash / Hot Soe for adding an optional external electronic- flash PictBridge Unit Dimensions HWD - 3.43'' x 5.02'' x 4.18'' / Weighs 1.14 lbs
